Alumni Share After-Graduate Experiences with Senior Seminar Course

Students Listening Intently This spring semester, James Kimble, Ph.D. hosted a virtual panel that showcased the experiences of three communication alumni to his Senior Seminar class of communication majors. Kimble, who is a professor of communication, was joined by Juliana Gijima, assistant director of the Career Center, to help facilitate the conversation between students and alumni.

The three alumni selected for the panel – Ellen Paul '21, Katherine Conlin '14, and Roger Barbieri '01 – were chosen for their differing experiences and jobs after graduating from the communication program over the course of the past 20 years. Paul currently works as an account technician at Diversified Insurance, while Conlin is a senior manager in integrated marketing at Paramount, and Barbieri serves as chair of the Board of Directors at StageworX as well as a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty.

"Professor Kimble asked me to speak to his senior thesis class about life after college as a Seton Hall alum," said Paul. "It was a great experience to reflect on my time at Seton Hall, share what I’ve learned with students about to graduate, and hear wisdom from fellow pirate alumni further along in their careers than me."

Communication major Ryan Casano, who just graduated this past May, commented, "It was a great experience to talk to some of Kimble's previous students. Roger Barbieri's message of being yourself in an interview really inspired me. I am confident that someone’s path does not have to be a straight line up, and it most likely will not be. However, you should continue to be yourself and be nice to others in all your experiences and things will work out."

Kimble reflected on the panel: "One of the most essential elements of a great education is inspiration, and that's what this workshop was all about. I can think of few better ways to inspire students than to invite them to network with their older Pirate siblings, who were eager to share their experiences and guidance." He added, "It also shows that our alums still cherish their time at Seton Hall, so much so that they continue to be enthusiastic about the Pirate family."
