Staff Members at WSOU give back to the Community

WSOU student managers

WSOU student managers pose with students from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School after discussing how college can help build a student into a multimedia professional.

WSOU 89.5FM, the student-run radio station at Seton Hall University in the College of Communication and the Arts, has been using its bandwidth to assist the surrounding community. For example, the station organizes several community service projects on a yearly basis.

This year, WSOU employees continued their yearly food drive for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey as well as a yearly clothing drive. Members of the station also worked with Tito’s Burritos & Wings in South Orange to sell a limited-edition burrito called "The Heaviest Burrito."

More recently, WSOU staff started up a program for high school students who are interested in multimedia. This program started with Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, during which the staff showed students around WSOU and explained how the college can assist them in a career in media.

"Getting to help people in our community and serving the underserved is everything WSOU is about," said Kayla Fonseca, the current station manager of WSOU. "Finding ways to assist the community and give back has always been a top priority for WSOU since the station's inception; giving back to the community through food drives or clothes drives, helps us connect with them even further."

Ryan Henry is the staff representative for WSOU who assists in creating the community initiatives for WSOU. "It’s important for us to give back to the community because there are so many people who suffer or don't have as much as us," he said. "At WSOU, we are in a fortunate position where we can help those in need. There's an indescribable joyful feeling you get when your actions make a difference in the world."
