VITA is a volunteer program that provides NO-COST tax return preparation services for families and/or individuals with household incomes of up to $75,000.

The eligible Seton Hall community is invited to sign up for an appointment to have their tax returns prepared. Seton Hall students participating in the Tax Lab will be preparing returns from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.

The Tax Lab course is new this semester, held by the Department of Accounting and Taxation within the Stillman School of Business. Through this, students will participate with the VITA program as well as receive IRS training, in person or virtual volunteer flexible hours, plus have regular meetings with the professor.

"As tax return preparation becomes more complex, we are excited to have our future tax professionals participate in the IRS VITA/United Way program. Our students are both gaining hands on experience and giving back to the community," said Avery E. Neumark, JD, LL.M., C.P.A, visiting instructor in the Department of Accounting and Taxation who leads Seton Hall’s Tax Lab.

Director of Financial Stability for the United Way of Greater Newark Danielle Corea-Smith indicated that they are "thrilled to have formalized this relationship through the Tax Lab course." She said, "Seton Hall has always been a tremendous partner of ours. We run on volunteer support, and with the addition of even more students assisting with tax preparation this year, we hope to serve more low-to-moderate income individuals and families than ever before."

The United Way of Greater Newark, in partnership with the Newark Asset Building Coalition, also recently announced the launch of the Newark Free Tax Prep initiative to provide free online and drop-off tax preparation services in Newark and East Orange, which is one of the volunteer opportunities for Seton Hall students.

"We have had a long-standing relationship with VITA and our partners at the United Way," added Senior Faculty Associate Danielle DiMeglio, C.P.A., M.B.A., who is a lecturer and director of graduate programs for the Department of Accounting and Taxation. "This is a great way to continue our relationship with the program while offering students hands on experience for elective credits."

This FREE service is open to all Seton Hall faculty, administration, staff, and students who qualify (families and/or individuals with household incomes of up to $75,000).
