Sports Media

The Sports Media interdisciplinary minor focuses on critical studies of sports media, including business and practice. Faculty and coursework incorporate special attention to the changing platforms of sports media so that students both understand the complex media environment and thrive in the sports media industry.

Students pursuing a minor in Sports Media will build a comprehensive base of knowledge and skills to position themselves to thrive in a complex, ever-changing sports media ecosystem. Graduates with a sports media minor pursue a variety of careers including on-air as television and radio broadcasters, behind the camera as directors and producers, and content creator roles.

Curriculum

Minor in Sports Media (18 credits)

Required Courses (9 credits)
Complete three (3) courses:

  • COBF 2882 Introduction to Sports Media (3 credits)
  • COBF 2884 Sports, Media, and Culture (3 credits)
  • COJR 1421 Writing for the Media (3 credits)

Practice of Sports Media (3 credits)
Choose one (1) course:

  • COJR 3433 Sports Reporting* (3 credits)
  • COBF 3033 Radio Sportscasting (3 credits)

Business of Sports Media (3 credits)
Choose one (1) course:

  • BSPM 4548 Professional Sports Franchises (3 credits)
  • BSPN/BLAW 4330 Sport Law** (3 credits)

Capstone Experience (3 credits)

  • COBF 3197 Internship*** (3 credits)

* Students must complete Writing for the Media before registering for Sports Reporting.
* For Sports Law, the Stillman School of Business requires the prerequisite BLAW 2301.
*** Students can apply only 3 credits of internship to the minor. If an internship is secured in sports media, the advisor will determine if it can be substituted for an elective course.

Get Involved

Students have the opportunity to participate in many experiential, hands-on opportunities including Pirate TV, WSOU 89.5 FM, The Setonian, the Center for Sport Management, the Seton Hall Sports Poll, and Pirate Sports Network (PSN).
