The Writing for College Summer Institutes are two, one-week summer programs designed to help high school students with the college application process, and to prepare them for writing in college classes.  The work students do in these Institutes will help prepare students to succeed in college.  Institute I focuses on the SAT Essay and the College Application Essay; Institute II focuses on reading, writing and research skills.  Students may register for one or both Institutes.  This program will expose students to academic writing and reading in a college setting, will acquaint students with college expectations for reading and writing, and will build students' skills in the areas of reading, writing, research (including analytical essay writing for college, on-line and in-person research, digital tools and presentation skills).  Complementing the morning writing sessions will be a variety of afternoon activities, including one field trip.

Faculty Biographies
Christen Madrazo, M.A., is a full-time Writing Instructor in the Seton Hall University English department, where she teaches Business Writing, Basic Skills Writing Workshop, and College English I and II. She also tutors writing at the Seton Hall Writing Center and runs Script-as-Lit, a campus-wide play reading series. As the Director of Education for Dramatic Adventure Theatre, Professor Madrazo teaches English and designs curriculum for teaching projects in Ecuador and Eastern Slovakia. At Rutgers University, Newark, she teaches Art & Culture in Public Service as well as a Writing Intensive Communications course for the School of Public Affairs and Administration. In addition to her work in the classroom, Professor Madrazo also privately coaches High School students in SAT writing as well as college application writing, focusing specifically on the art of creating a strong, authentic personal statement.

Ed Jones, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of English and Director of the Basic Skills Program in the Seton Hall University English department. He has published research in both psychology and composition journals. He is particularly interested in the conditions that facilitate the transfer of writing knowledge from one situation or class to another. As an instructor who also has responsibility for the development of others' teaching skills in the first-year-writing program, he has developed ways of setting up the writing classroom to mimic the environment of actual researchers and scholars. For five years, he chaired the New Jersey Writing Alliance, an organization that provides opportunities to improve student writing in our state by building bridges between secondary and college educators. Dr. Jones received his Ph.D. in English Education from New York University.
