| This is a web-based course. Introduction to special education law, the referral and evaluation process, definitions for federal and state disability classifications as well as the associated behavioral and learning characteristics for students within the areas. All classifications will be discussed with extra focus on learning disabilities, mental retardation, ADHD, autism, and emotional and behavioral disorders. Exploration of concepts such as the social construction of disability, the development of a sense of self, stereotypes, prejudice and stigma. 3 credits | ||

For High School Students The Institute is a one-week program designed for high school students interested in learning about the roles and functions of careers in the law enforcement, courts and corrections fields from experienced educators, law enforcement professionals and a forensic scientist - with field trips to a police academy and state prison. Participants will meet and hear from a forensic scientist and observe some practical applications: (CSI Effect) and will have an opportunity to participate in activities and discussion with the presenters.

For High School Students Main Campus-South OrangeRegister now » The Fantasy and Fiction Summer Institute is a one-week, on-campus summer program designed for high school students who would like the opportunity to discuss three classic works in this genre - J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King, C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and J.K. Rowlings' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows--under the direction of an experienced college professor. The program will guide students through engaging analyses of these novels, as well as discussions of the role of fantasy fiction and its history. We will also be viewing and discussing film adaptations of each novel. Ideally, students should have read at least two of the novels prior to the Institute. Institute I focuses on creative non-fiction writing; Institute II focuses on fiction and poetry. Students may register for one or both Institutes. Co-taught by Seton Hall University creative writing experts, the programs will introduce students to the fundamentals of three genres of creative writing: fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction, as well as the rudiments of literary craft. Students will explore a range of literary styles, both through daily reading assignments and daily writing exercises. Main Campus-South Orange Register Now » The Own Your Identity: Social Media Done Right course introduces students to the world of social media (e.g, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+, etc.,), as well as, methods to protect one’s privacy on the Internet. The course will be hands-on and students will learn the ins & outs of the dominant social media platforms. More importantly, students will learn how to use these social media tools to accomplish a particular goal, such as interesting ways to explore potential colleges and ideas to employ on college applications. The students will also go on a field trip to the home of NHL New Jersey Devils to examine how the Devils’ marketing team uses social media to help promote the team with the fans. Goals:
