Seton Hall Responds

Response to Hurricane Sandy

Message from Dr. Esteban

Dr. EstebanLast week, Hurricane Sandy left an indelible mark on this region. With a death toll of over 100, widespread destruction of personal property, significant damage to our transportation infrastructure, power outages and more have caused untold misery and suffering. The effects of Hurricane Sandy are still being felt by members of our Seton Hall Community and by those we love.  Many of our neighbors lost everything.  Let us respond generously in empathy, beginning now.

I call on members of the Seton Hall community to be part of our efforts to help our brothers and sisters during this time of need. I have asked DOVE to coordinate our efforts.

These are just some ways that you can help:

Material Assistance

From Monday, November 5 to Friday, November 30, 2012, donation of materials goods can be made to the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) by visiting the office in Boland Hall, Room 108, or by placing them in the drop boxes located in the residence halls.  These goods will be distributed through the agency of Catholic Charities of Newark or Croatian Relief Services of Fairview.  The goods needed are paper towels, bath towels, wipes, bleach, diapers, soap, laundry detergent, toothbrushes, toothpaste, water, peanut butter, and other non-perishable food items (canned goods, pasta, rice, cereal and coffee).

Such material goods will also be collected by the Seton Hall Athletics Department at the following games:

  • Friday, November 9, 2012, 5 p.m.: Women's Basketball Game, Walsh Gym
  • Friday, November 9, 2012, 7:30 p.m.: Men’s Basketball Game, Walsh Gym

Financial Assistance

Monetary donations will be accepted from Monday, November 5 to Friday, November 30, 2012.  All donations will assist with the relief efforts led by Catholic Charities USA.  Please make checks payable to Seton Hall University with “Hurricane Sandy Relief” in the memo line.  Deliver or send checks through inter-office mail to the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) in Boland Hall, Room 108. The Division of Volunteer Efforts will assist local organizations with sorting donations and providing direct service to those in need.  DOVE is soliciting opportunities for volunteerism.  You can indicate your interest by signing up in person at Boland Hall, Room 108, or register online using the form on the right.

Members of the Seton Hall community who are in need of assistance can also send us a confidential email explaining your needs at michelle.peterson@shu.edu. We will do our best to assist you and direct you to the appropriate agency.
